2020 will be a year of regrouping. I have committed to a marathon-a-month and finding some fun while finishing my doctorate (and secretly starting a second master’s). Let’s start with a little New Year’s celebration…

I wanted to share the medal from Hilton Head Marathon because of the landmarks on it.

I took this picture just after earning the medal while still in Jarvis Creek Park. The start and finish took place here, and as shown in previous posts, none of the run was along the beach nor lighthouse. However, the course allowed me to see so much of the island I would have otherwise missed had I only visited the iconic scenes in the medal. I should also point out I would have missed lighthouse if it weren’t for the medal. I always love it when a medal accurately portrays the city in which the race takes place. This one didn’t disappoint on a #MedalMonday

Running the Hilton Head marathon meant I got to cross off another state on the quest to 50. Due to the weather, I wore running tights and low socks. Here’s a secret… I always wear bandaids on my nips but when I wear low socks, I put bandaids on my achilles as well. Welp, they fell off after about two miles, so both of my achilles had me looking looking like Achilles.
Parking was super easy at the high school. About a half mile walk to the start line, and it was daylight out thank you to the 8am start time. It was 39, but a sunny 39. The first couple of miles took place in the park and were relatively boring when comparing them to what would come. The real fun began after about mile 5 along the expressway.

Hilton Head Marathon
Ever wonder what it is like to be stupid/crazy enough to challenge yourself to 26.2 miles. It sounds audacious to a lot of people, but chances are, if you have ever done a couple of theme parks in one day, you have done at least 10-15 miles. A couple of years ago, I did a marathon-a-month, but 2019 was crazy between school, work, and moving. I stopped running, gained weight, and lost focus. I signed up for the Dopey Challenge and completed that in January, but it was so hot and I was so ill-prepared, I was just grateful to finish and not have my course cut short.
So, when you know you are going to be running a marathon, and let’s be clear, I do NOT run the whole thing (I use the run/walk/run method), of course you worry about training and all the running stuff, but really it is important to look at weather, the course, and things to do in the city. Truly, there is no better way to see a city than on foot. If you’ve never been to Hilton Head, SC, here are a couple of things to consider…
